Grain sorghum, energy alternative to corn

We trade grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) of Paraguayan origin, 2026 harvest, delivered in bulk. With 65–75% starch and 10.0–12.5% protein, it is the natural substitute for corn as an energy source in rations for poultry, swine, feedlot cattle and dairy. Its nutritional profile is equivalent to corn in metabolizable energy value, with the agronomic advantage of greater tolerance to drought and marginal soils.

Control of condensed tannins (0–50 ppm in low-tannin varieties) is the critical parameter that defines its use in monogastrics: below that threshold, sorghum is incorporated into rations without penalty on protein digestibility and feed conversion. Beyond animal nutrition, sorghum is valued as feedstock for ethanol (sorghum ethanol), where its fermentable starch content positions it as a strategic alternative to corn in bioethanol plants.

How it's made

Three stages, grain fit for nutrition and industry

1. Selection and reception. Sorghum harvested in Paraguayan fields arrives at the plant, is sorted by moisture and purity, and selected by variety and tannin level (low-tannin varieties for animal nutrition and industry).

2. Cleaning and grading. Grain is cleaned to remove dust, broken kernels, foreign seeds and impurities, and graded by size and hectoliter weight. This stage stabilises the lot within the contracted analytical ranges (moisture 12–14%, protein 10–12.5%, starch 65–75%).

3. Storage and bulk dispatch. Sorghum is stored in silos under controlled temperature and humidity, with pest monitoring, until dispatch. It is delivered in bulk with per-lot analytical documentation and a 12-month shelf life under appropriate storage conditions.

Applications

Four buyer industries

Poultry and swine

Energy source alternative to corn in rations for broilers, layers, breeders and pigs at all stages. Low-tannin varieties (≤ 50 ppm) substitute corn without penalising feed conversion or protein digestibility.

Feedlot and dairy

Energy component of finishing feedlot rations and total mixed rations (TMR) for dairy cows. Sorghum's higher proportion of by-pass starch versus corn favours ruminal digestion and delivers sustained energy.

Sorghum ethanol

Fermentable feedstock for bioethanol plants. Starch content (65–75%) and regional availability position sorghum as a strategic alternative to corn in the biofuels industry, particularly in years of tight corn supply.

Feed mills

Energy raw material for feed mills formulating for poultry, swine and feedlot integrations. Partial or total substitution of corn with low-tannin sorghum optimises cost without altering the energy-protein balance of the ration.

Regional export

Available for export programs to Latin American and Asia-Pacific markets, where sorghum is a strategic input for animal nutrition and bioethanol industries.
